A beginner’s guide to name numerology.

Name numerology shows up constantly in baby-naming conversations, usually with very little explanation of what it actually is. Here's the real version: where it comes from, how the math works, and how much weight it's reasonable to put on it.
What name numerology actually is
Numerology is the practice of assigning numeric values to letters and interpreting the resulting sums symbolically. It isn't a single unified system — several distinct traditions exist, most notably the Pythagorean system (which we use on this site) and the older Chaldean system, which assigns different values and doesn't follow strict alphabetical order. They can produce different numbers for the same name, which is worth knowing if you've seen conflicting results elsewhere.
Where the Pythagorean system comes from
The Pythagorean system is named for the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras, whose followers believed numbers held symbolic and even mystical significance beyond pure arithmetic. The letter-to-number mapping used today is a much later systemization of that general idea, adapted for the Latin alphabet and popularized through 20th-century numerology writing. It's best understood as a long-running symbolic tradition, not an unbroken teaching that traces directly back to Pythagoras himself.
How the calculation works
Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a digit from 1 to 9, repeating in cycles:
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A, J, S | B, K, T | C, L, U | D, M, V | E, N, W | F, O, X | G, P, Y | H, Q, Z | I, R |
To calculate a name's number, add up the value of every letter, then keep reducing the total by adding its digits together until you reach a single digit — unless the total lands on 11 or 22 along the way, which are treated as "master numbers" and left unreduced.
Let's work through an example with the name Noah: N (5) + O (6) + A (1) + H (8) = 20. Reduce 20 by adding its digits: 2 + 0 = 2. Noah's number is 2. You can check our arithmetic on any name in our database on its individual numerology page.

How seriously should you take it?
Treat it the way you'd treat a horoscope or a Myers-Briggs result at a dinner party: a fun, structured lens for reflection, not a data-backed prediction about your child's personality. There's no scientific mechanism by which the numeric value of letters in a name would shape how a person turns out, and we'd be doing you a disservice if we implied otherwise. What it is good for is a lighthearted way to explore a shortlist, spark conversation with a partner, or add one more layer of meaning to a name you already love for other reasons.
