About

A naming resource built the slow way.

Magic Baby Names started from a simple frustration: nearly every baby name site online reads like the same list, reworded. Same three-sentence meanings. Same recycled "trending names" articles. Same thin pages that exist to rank, not to help.

We wanted to build something different: a site where every name published has been individually researched, where the etymology is real and cross-checked, and where a page tells you something you couldn't have guessed from the spelling alone. That takes longer than scraping a name list and running it through a template — which is exactly why most sites don't do it, and exactly why we think it's worth doing.

We're not a large editorial team with a research department. Magic Baby Names is built and maintained deliberately, in researched batches, by people who'd rather publish 200 names worth trusting than 60,000 that aren't. Every name on the site right now has a documented origin, a cross-checked meaning, and a written cultural note that's actually specific to that name — you can read our full methodology for exactly how that works.

The site grows the same way it started: one researched batch at a time, across as many naming traditions as we can do justice to. If a culture or language you're looking for isn't represented yet, that's a gap we're actively working to close — not a judgment about which names matter.

What we believe a naming resource should do

  • Tell you the truth about where a name comes from, including when that's genuinely uncertain.
  • Give you enough real context to feel confident, not just a one-line definition.
  • Never invent a meaning to fill space on a page.
  • Treat numerology, folklore, and tradition as exactly that — cultural context, not science.
